Observations & Snow-Watching
Snow is less likely at Alishan than Hehuan Mountain, but strong cold waves with temperatures near 0°C can still lead to slippery icy roads. Alerts are estimated from Alishan weather station data. The site stops assessing conditions when observations are more than 3 hours old.
Sunrise Golden Hour
Alishan is famous for sunrise and cloud seas. At Zhushan Sunrise Viewing Platform or Ogasawara Observation Deck, get into position about 30 minutes before the displayed sunrise time for the blue hour and early light. The countdown is calculated for Zhushan’s coordinates; because the Yushan Range lies to the east, the sun may actually appear above the ridge a few minutes after the astronomical sunrise. Zhushan Line train schedules change with sunrise times. Check Alishan Forest Railway notices.
Before Going Up
- Afternoon fog can be dense along Highway 18. Bring warm clothing and rain gear; use headlights and slow down on evening descents.
- UV readings come from hourly observations at Alishan Weather Station. Sunny high-elevation midday UV can reach Very High or above.
- Tataka on the New Central Cross-Island Highway is higher and more susceptible to winter icing. Also check the Tataka / Yushan Trailhead page.
