Distances between stations are approximate values calculated along the route geometry (only gas stations within 500 m of the route are counted). OpenStreetMap is edited by volunteers, so stations may be missing or closed; check business hours on site. On remote stretches, plan your fuel carefully rather than relying on this data alone.
Elevation Profile (Zhongpu Interchange ⇄ Tataka; highest approx. 2617 m, lowest approx. 63 m)
The horizontal axis is distance along the route; the vertical axis is elevation (the height scale is exaggerated, so slopes look steeper than they are). Dots mark cameras (tappable) and stations. Elevation is estimated from AWS terrain data; tunnel and bridge sections are interpolated between their ends, so errors of several tens of meters are possible. For planning reference only.
Map
After opening the map, use the buttons to toggle layers. Dot colors follow the estimated road surface; tap a dot to see weather and the camera. Rainfall, temperature, and wind are from the nearest station to each point; road surface moisture is an estimate. Gas stations, stores, restaurants, and attractions come from OpenStreetMap and only include places near the route; check business hours and conditions on site. For closures and traffic control, rely on the Highway Bureau live traffic information ↗. The route line runs from Zhongpu Interchange to Tataka, joined from the OpenStreetMap road network. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Items labeled “Scenic Live Stream” are YouTube live streams from scenic area headquarters under the Tourism Administration. They show scenery, not the road surface, so they are only useful for checking the sky, clouds, and sea conditions. Streams occasionally go offline or change address.

Alishan Highway climbs east from Zhongpu, Chiayi County, through Chukou, Longmei, Xiding, and Shizhuo to Alishan, then continues along the New Central Cross-Island Highway toward Tataka. It rises from the plains to more than 2,000 m above sea level. Ten Highway Bureau cameras cover the route; the Tataka-end camera at Highway 21, 144K, is just beyond Highway 18’s endpoint. See the separate Alishan and Tataka pages for sunrise, cloud sea, and high-elevation weather.
Highlights & Attractions
Chukou, Xiding, and Shizhuo are tea-growing areas and viewpoints for cloud seas. Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is around 88K, and Tataka offers views toward Yushan.
- Chukou / Tianchang-Dijiu Bridge: Rest stops near the foot of the mountains.
- Xiding / Eryanping Trail: Park separately to walk the trail.
- Shizhuo tea area: Tea plantations, restaurants, and rest stops; keep travel lanes clear when parking.
- Fenqihu: Requires a detour onto County Road 169; allow extra travel time.
Typical Weather
Temperatures vary greatly with elevation. Clear weather in the lowlands does not guarantee clear conditions above. Low clouds, fog, local rain, and wet pavement can develop quickly. Summer brings afternoon showers; fall and winter bring cold, damp conditions. Early-morning icing is possible around Tataka during cold waves.
Riding Tips
Long grades, numerous curves, tour buses, and shuttles can cause weekend and flower-season delays. Watch for traffic near the Highway 18/3 junction and Shizhuo. Allow more braking distance downhill. Use headlights in fog, watch for vehicles turning into attractions, carry warm clothing, and check current Highway Bureau and Alishan scenic area notices.
