🟡 Cherry blossom season access reminder
In the past two years, during cherry blossom season (roughly early February to early March), the Jianshi Township Office announced access restrictions on the back-mountain road. These dates come from past announcements; this year's dates and rules follow the office's latest announcement, so check the link below before you go.

Gas Stations Along the Route (in travel order, from OpenStreetMap)

Distances between stations are approximate values calculated along the route geometry (only gas stations within 500 m of the route are counted). OpenStreetMap is edited by volunteers, so stations may be missing or closed; check business hours on site. On remote stretches, plan your fuel carefully rather than relying on this data alone.
Elevation Profile (Jianshi ⇄ Smangus; highest approx. 1655 m, lowest approx. 278 m)
Highest 1655 m
Jianshi 278 mSmangus 1654 m
The horizontal axis is distance along the route; the vertical axis is elevation (the height scale is exaggerated, so slopes look steeper than they are). Dots mark cameras (tappable) and stations. Elevation is estimated from AWS terrain data; tunnel and bridge sections are interpolated between their ends, so errors of several tens of meters are possible. For planning reference only.
There are no public cameras along this route that can be viewed directly on the web. This page only provides weather along the route and estimated road surface moisture.

Zhu 60 is the back-mountain road of Jianshi Township. It runs from the Jianshi Township Office area southeast through Meihua, Naluo, Yulao, Xiuluan, and Taigang to Xinguang, and then connects to Smangus. The page covers about 47 km; distances are estimates from the road alignment, so the page shows place names instead of kilometer markers. There are no Highway Bureau or Tourism Administration cameras along the route, so this page shows weather only, with no live images.
Highlights
Yulao: the Yulao viewing platform, with views of the valley and sea of clouds on clear days.
Xiuluan and Taigang: Tayal villages with police stations and a few places to eat and stay.
Smangus: the Tayal village known as the “Village of God”. The old-growth tree grove is a separate walk, and entry and visits follow the village’s own rules.
Weather
Elevation climbs from about 500 m at Jianshi to over 1,000 m around Xinguang and Smangus. Afternoon fog and showers are common, and it is much colder than Hsinchu city. Check the rainfall and humidity at each point on this page rather than the city forecast.
With no cameras, the page estimates the surface from nearby weather and rain stations and labels it as an estimate; conditions on site prevail. After heavy rain this road is at risk of landslides, rockfall, and washed-out shoulders. This site does not judge whether the road is closed. Check announcements from the Jianshi Township Office and the Highway Bureau.
Cherry blossom season and access restrictions
In the past two years, during cherry blossom season (roughly early February to early March), the Jianshi Township Office has announced access restrictions on the back-mountain road. The dates and rules for this year follow the office’s latest announcement. From late January to early March this page shows a reminder at the top with a link to the announcement; please check it before you go.
Riding notes
The road is narrow and twisty, with short sight lines on some stretches. Slow down and keep right for oncoming traffic, especially farm trucks and shuttle vans, and do not overtake on blind corners. Smangus is a living village: follow on-site signs for riding and parking, and do not enter private land.
Whether registration, timed one-way passage, or vehicle limits apply follows announcements from the township office and the village. This site does not judge it, so confirm before you go. Mobile signal is unreliable in the mountains; download an offline map and tell someone your plan.
