Gas Stations Along the Route (in travel order, from OpenStreetMap)
OpenStreetMap lists no gas stations along this route. There may really be none, or none may have been mapped. Check your fuel level before you leave.
Distances between stations are approximate values calculated along the route geometry (only gas stations within 500 m of the route are counted). OpenStreetMap is edited by volunteers, so stations may be missing or closed; check business hours on site. On remote stretches, plan your fuel carefully rather than relying on this data alone.
Elevation Profile (Shenkeng ⇄ Shifen; highest approx. 291 m, lowest approx. 50 m)
The horizontal axis is distance along the route; the vertical axis is elevation (the height scale is exaggerated, so slopes look steeper than they are). Dots mark cameras (tappable) and stations. Elevation is estimated from AWS terrain data; tunnel and bridge sections are interpolated between their ends, so errors of several tens of meters are possible. For planning reference only.
Map
After opening the map, use the buttons to toggle layers. Dot colors follow the estimated road surface; tap a dot to see weather and the camera. Rainfall, temperature, and wind are from the nearest station to each point; road surface moisture is an estimate. Gas stations, stores, restaurants, and attractions come from OpenStreetMap and only include places near the route; check business hours and conditions on site. For closures and traffic control, rely on the Highway Bureau live traffic information ↗. The route line runs from Shenkeng to Shifen, joined from the OpenStreetMap road network. When local riders say “106,” they usually mean the stretch of County Road 106 from Shenkeng through Shiding and Pingxi to Shifen. The archway near the National Freeway 5 Shiding interchange, at the junction of County Roads 106 and 106B, is a common meeting point. Go left toward Pingxi/Shifen on 106, or right on 106B toward Pinglin.
The road runs through creek valleys and shaded forests. It is narrow and winding, with limited sunlight. After rain, surfaces dry slowly; moss and fallen leaves can reduce traction. Public cameras are scarce. This page estimates section conditions using roadside rainfall, temperature, and wind observations, plus two cameras: one at the Shiding Archway intersection (New Taipei City) and one near Shifen (Highway Bureau).
Highlights & Attractions
A classic relaxed ride for Taipei/New Taipei riders, passing former coal-mining towns. Stops include Shenkeng Old Street, Jingtong Station, Pingxi, and Shifen Waterfall.
Typical Weather
Rain is frequent in the mountains, particularly around Pingxi and Shifen. Winters are cold and damp.
Riding Tips
Slow down in villages. Watch for weekend visitors and crowds around the Pingxi Line railway.
