Distances between stations are approximate values calculated along the route geometry (only gas stations within 500 m of the route are counted). OpenStreetMap is edited by volunteers, so stations may be missing or closed; check business hours on site. On remote stretches, plan your fuel carefully rather than relying on this data alone.
Elevation Profile (Su'ao ⇄ Chongde; highest approx. 289 m, lowest approx. 13 m)
The horizontal axis is distance along the route; the vertical axis is elevation (the height scale is exaggerated, so slopes look steeper than they are). Dots mark cameras (tappable) and stations. Elevation is estimated from AWS terrain data; tunnel and bridge sections are interpolated between their ends, so errors of several tens of meters are possible. For planning reference only.
Map
After opening the map, use the buttons to toggle layers. Dot colors follow the estimated road surface; tap a dot to see weather and the camera. Rainfall, temperature, and wind are from the nearest station to each point; road surface moisture is an estimate. Gas stations, stores, restaurants, and attractions come from OpenStreetMap and only include places near the route; check business hours and conditions on site. For closures and traffic control, rely on the Highway Bureau live traffic information ↗. The route line runs from Su'ao to Chongde, joined from the OpenStreetMap road network (some sections follow Prov. Hwy 9D). Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

The Suhua Highway runs about 60 km along Highway 9 from Su’ao in Yilan to Chongde in Hualien. Since completion of the Suhua Highway Improvement Project, several sections (Su’ao–Dong’ao, Nan’ao–Heping, and Hezhong–Daqingshui) use newer tunnels. The older coastal road is Highway 9D; it offers more ocean views but is narrower. The Daqingshui–Chongde stretch still follows the original road along Qingshui Cliff.
Heavy rain and typhoons can trigger precautionary closures, and large vehicles are common. Check official access before leaving. Seven cameras are on Highway 9 and one on the old Highway 9D Guanyin section.
Highlights & Attractions
One of Taiwan’s most dramatic coastal roads, with Qingshui Cliff, Dong’ao Bay, and the Nan’ao Plain.
Typical Weather
Northeast monsoons bring prolonged fall/winter rainfall. Rockfall and landslide risks increase after heavy rain.
Riding Tips
Large motorcycles using the improved highway should maintain safe following distances in long tunnels and pay attention to ventilation and tunnel safety. Standard motorcycles must follow current access restrictions. Highway 9D has many blind curves; keep right and maintain a safe sight distance.
