Map
After opening the map, use the buttons to toggle layers. Dot colors follow the estimated road surface; tap a dot to see weather and the camera. Rainfall, temperature, and wind are from the nearest station to each point; road surface moisture is an estimate. For closures and traffic control, rely on the Highway Bureau live traffic information ↗. Only camera and station locations are marked; reliable route geometry is not yet available for this route. Items labeled “Scenic Live Stream” are YouTube live streams from scenic area headquarters under the Tourism Administration. They show scenery, not the road surface, so they are only useful for checking the sky, clouds, and sea conditions. Streams occasionally go offline or change address.

The Wutai Highway enters the Pingtung mountains from Sandimen and passes Qingye, Yila, and Shenshan before reaching Wutai, a route of about 21 km. Its curves, Indigenous communities, and valley scenery suit a half-day round trip. Five Highway Bureau cameras cover Sandimen to Yila; above Yila there are no route cameras, so the page uses weather observations near Shenshan and Wutai.
Highlights & Attractions
The route passes Rukai and Paiwan communities, with traditional slate houses, murals, and churches. Guchuan Bridge offers distinctive valley views; view it from safe parking areas, not from the bridge. Respect community privacy, homes, ceremonial areas, and local visitor arrangements. Ask permission before photographing people, and confirm restaurant or activity opening days.
Typical Weather
Sunny, hot conditions on the Pingtung Plain do not rule out mountain rain, low clouds, or fog. Summer thunderstorms, typhoons, and heavy rain increase river, slope, and rockfall risks. Shaded corners and poor-drainage areas can stay wet; slow down when visibility drops.
Riding Tips
Curves are frequent and sightlines short. Do not overtake across double yellow lines or stop for photographs in curves. Turn back when rockfall, landslide, heavy-rain, or traffic-control notices require it. Check current Highway Bureau restrictions; the route description does not guarantee today’s access. Refuel and bring water before entering the mountains.
