Distances between stations are approximate values calculated along the route geometry (only gas stations within 500 m of the route are counted). OpenStreetMap is edited by volunteers, so stations may be missing or closed; check business hours on site. On remote stretches, plan your fuel carefully rather than relying on this data alone.
Elevation Profile (Daxi ⇄ Zhuangwei; highest approx. 1225 m, lowest approx. 3 m)
The horizontal axis is distance along the route; the vertical axis is elevation (the height scale is exaggerated, so slopes look steeper than they are). Dots mark cameras (tappable) and stations. Elevation is estimated from AWS terrain data; tunnel and bridge sections are interpolated between their ends, so errors of several tens of meters are possible. For planning reference only.
Map
After opening the map, use the buttons to toggle layers. Dot colors follow the estimated road surface; tap a dot to see weather and the camera. Rainfall, temperature, and wind are from the nearest station to each point; road surface moisture is an estimate. Gas stations, stores, restaurants, and attractions come from OpenStreetMap and only include places near the route; check business hours and conditions on site. For closures and traffic control, rely on the Highway Bureau live traffic information ↗. The route line runs from Daxi to Zhuangwei, joined from the OpenStreetMap road network. The Northern Cross-Island Highway follows Provincial Highway 7 from Daxi, Taoyuan (near Cikang Road and Zhongzheng Road), through Sanmin, Fuxing/Jiaobanshan, Luofu, and Baling (Lalashan), then into Yilan through Mingchi, Qilan, Niudou, Yuanshan, and Yilan City to Zhuangwei Gongguan, where it meets Highway 2. The route is about 130 km long. The roughly 82-km Daxi-to-Baitao Bridge section near Qilan is mountainous and climbs above 1,000 m. Highway 7A branches toward Lishan at Qilan.
Mountain weather changes rapidly, with afternoon fog and the risk of rockfalls, landslides, and traffic restrictions after storms or typhoons. Fuel and services are limited. This page includes ten Highway Bureau cameras; Daxi and Sanmin conditions use nearby weather stations.
Highlights & Attractions
The highway crosses the Xueshan Range through forested scenery. Stops include Jiaobanshan, Luofu Bridge, Baling Bridge, and Mingchi National Forest Recreation Area.
Typical Weather
Fog often lingers between Baling and Mingchi, near the highest part of the route. Limited sunshine can leave mossy, slippery pavement.
Riding Tips
Narrow sections sometimes operate as a single lane for both directions. Yield to large produce trucks and tour buses, and use your horn when appropriate to warn of your approach around blind mountain curves.
