Observations & Cold-Weather Safety
Tataka, at about 2,610 m, is an access point for hikes toward Yushan Main Peak and the Batongguan Traverse, and it is the high point of the New Central Cross-Island Highway. Day/night temperature changes are large. Watch for black ice when temperatures drop below 2°C. Icing warnings are based on the latest station data, not direct road measurements; follow on-site signs.
- Ridge winds: Based on observations at Yushan North Peak Weather Station (3,845 m). An average wind of Beaufort 8 or higher (17.2 m/s or more) triggers a red warning because hypothermia can develop quickly; Beaufort 6 or higher triggers yellow. These are observed station winds, not a ridge forecast.
- Coming days: Rain probability and general weather use the Central Weather Administration’s seven-day forecast for Xinyi Township, representing lower elevations. Use it for trends only.
Sunrise Golden Hour
The sunrise time above is calculated for Tataka Saddle. Nearby Linzhi Mountain and Lulin Mountain trails are options for sunrise viewing. Arrive roughly 30 minutes early.
